First ever issue (October 2006)

Dr Scott-mumby with laptopWelcome

Dear friend,

Welcome to the first ever edition of my Wholesome Living Letter. I hope you will enjoy it and find it a refreshing source of knowledge and inspiration in years to come.

I’m aiming for a rather different slant. There are newsy medical letters out there – mostly the kind that just cut and paste news from recent newspaper or journal articles. I think these are boring. Moreover it leads to contradictory advice. Those authors who do this kind of thing will quote what is current and in the shifting sea of fashion that we call science that will mean one thing is “in” this year and “out” next year.

It is hard to form any kind of wholesome health and living plan when this is going on. For instance, you may hear that exercise – burning calories - is good, so you work out. Then somebody says (as just recently) “It isn’t just calories that count, it’s over what time period. You need to exercise harder; more calories per minute!” But then you read somewhere that hard exercise is bad for the joints and moreover creates a lot of free radicals, which damage tissues and may shorten your life.

It can become very confusing. Even a skilled physician can get in a spin with all this conflicting research. Let no-one pretend otherwise.

I have a different approach altogether. I use what works. To turn around an old catchphrase: That’s all very well in practice but will it stand up in theory? The joke is that theories are fine, until they cut across practical experience. If that happens, I go with the reality not what theory says should be true. Theories have a habit of not holding up, remember.

Suppose there existed an oral vaccine that is:

• 100% safe for all who use it;
• can be taken orally and tastes good;
• can be manufactured in virtually every country in the world, with the humble technology available to many third-world nations;
• so cheap that virtually everyone in the world can afford it;
• able to protect against a wide variety of organisms, including viruses, rickettsia, parasites, protozoan, bacteria, mycoplasm, yeast/fungus, amoeba;
• capable of reducing or eliminating allergic reactions to vast numbers of exogenous and endogenous substances;
• boosts the immune system, accelerates healing of injuries, helps repair nervous system damage, burns fat and builds lean muscle, increases vitality and stamina, and elevates mood;
• and might – just might – deal a deadly blow against a number of cancers?

Suppose, moreover, there were over 4,000 clinical studies worldwide which describe the efficacy of this oral vaccine in the treatment of hundreds of different diseases.

Would you be interested to know what it was?

I’ll bet you would.

Health tip for winter

You'll be getting plenty of these from me over the years. Since winter is fast approaching, let me bring out one of my old chestnuts - not that I ever hear anyone else with this knowledge. It's one of those curious things where the truth flies in the face of what everyone accepts is correct. Do it wrong (what you are expected to do) and you prolong suffering, do it right and you'll be well in no time.

That's why I'm publishing it.

Masturbation is good for you!

Despite everything you were told at home, at school and in Church, masturbation is OK. It’s been around a long time and is not going to go away. So enjoy!

It is one of my sayings that because something is “common” it is not “normal” but I think in this case we can say that it truly is one and the same thing. In the animal kingdom primates often masturbate – and I mean in the wild; I’m not talking about the notoriously disturbed behaviour of animals in captivity. In humans around 95% of young males admit to masturbation and 70% of young females. So if you do it or anyone in your family, that’s hardly being abnormal! Just get over any hang ups....

This article goes on to describe several health benefits of masturbation and why a decent physician would even recommend it.

Meniere's disease

Let’s look at a topic with some good lessons behind it.

Meniere’s disease (named after French neurologist Prosper Ménière) is an affliction of the ear, which leads to bouts of reeling dizziness and occasionally the patient will topple over. It is often associated with impaired hearing. This unpleasant condition is caused by changes in the inner ear circular canals, our organs of balance, hence the spinning attacks. When severe, the patient actually vomits – a kind of motion sickness (without the motion!).

The “treatment” was therefore similar to motion sickness, using Meclizine (Antivert), a kind of anti-histamine or Stemetil (prochlorperazine), which belongs to a group of medications known as the phenothiazine antipsychotics. Even worse, some doctors would prescribe Ativan (Lorazepam), which to me is unconscionable.

Following the lead from Richard Mackarness and other pioneers in the 1970s, I began to investigate this condition for possible...

GUEST SPOT What is it you really really want?

By Damien Senn

If the 90's British pop sensation 'the Spice Girls' ever get remembered for anything, I hope it's for bringing the question 'now tell me what you want, what you really, really want?' to the mass consciousness. Now you may laugh at this, but when you really, really think about it, is there a more important question you could ask yourself?

What is a want? A want is a desire. Whether or not we get what we want is often based upon the strength of our desires. I know many will probably argue with this statement, but in some strange way, there is a part of me that truly believes that we all get what we want. If you really had a burning desire to change your reality, you would do it, right? Well, I'd like to think so. Now if you're convinced that it's time you actually started wanting more, then allow me to share three simple but powerful secrets...

The number one recipe in my office

This is the most popular recipe of all time that I share. Patients in my office in the UK were mad for it. It's wheat-free chocolate cake - great for grain allergics and delicious too! It's actually very easy to make and easy to remember, providing we stick to British measures (ounces instead of cups). It's all based on 6s....
